Friends, PSL parties and makeshift fall

Friends, PSL parties and makeshift fall

One of the things I’ve missed most since living in Africa (aside from family, of course) is SEASONS. I love and miss them all, and the holidays that come with them. But I really miss fall. Crisp air, feeling cozy, infinity scarves, colored leaves and the smell of cinnamon. *happy sigh*. I guess it doesn’t help that we here in Senegal are in peak hot season when what I’ve always known as “fall” rolls around in my big-sky hometown. So yes, it’s always a time of year when I feel a little homesick for mama’s kitchen, her to-die-for blueberry and apple pies, and the time of year when we look forward to turkey dinners and the Christmas festivities that follow.

But this year a special event popped up on my calendar, and let me tell you, it was something to look forward to.

A PSL {pumpkin spice latte, you should know that by now} party at Ashley’s house. She even made a Facebook group and changed the cover photo to orange and yellow trees. It was so exciting.

We gathered in the well-air conditioned living room, wearing red flats and tan booties with wax print dresses, jeans {too hot for ‘real world Dakar’ right now} and navy dresses. We soaked up the sound of Frank Sinatra playing in the background and the scent of vanilla candles while Ashley made our PSLs to order and served us homemade pumpkin spice donuts. We met new friends, talked, laughed, felt the best kind of chilly, and ignored the world outside. A world that is muggy and different and one that has power cuts, roaches and cultural stresses.

Michelle + a dang good homemade donut.
Perfection in a mug.
Perfection in a mug.

We were removed from the outside world and transported to a world full of hot seasonal drinks, pretty napkins and the momentary reality of fall in Dakar.

{Thanks for hosting, Ashley!}
